The 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible is the second year of the C2 generation and represents the most refined version of the original Sting Ray design before significant mechanical updates arrived for 1965. Total 1964 Corvette production reached 22,229 units, with convertibles accounting for nearly 63 percent — approximately 13,925 examples. Base price for the convertible was $4,037. Some C2 bodies beginning in 1964 were supplied by Dow-Smith of Ionia, Michigan, a division of the A.O. Smith Company, in addition to the St. Louis assembly plant.
Notable 1964-specific updates over the 1963 model include redesigned shock absorbers, revised front and rear spring rates, additional body insulation, revised transmission mounts and shift linkage, a simulated walnut steering wheel, wider seat bolsters, and revised instrument faces. The fake hood vents present on the 1963 model were eliminated; the hood indentations remain. The convertible was offered with a standard black soft top; a white soft top was a factory option, with 4,843 so equipped. A removable hardtop was available as an additional factory option.
Engine Options: All 1964 Corvette engines are 327 cu. in. small-block V8s. The base engine produces 250 horsepower. The L75 option produces 300 horsepower. The L76 produces 365 horsepower — up from 340 horsepower in 1963 — with solid lifters and a high-lift camshaft. The top engine is the L84, a Rochester fuel-injected unit (“fuelie”) rated at 375 horsepower, also increased from 360 horsepower in 1963. The L84 is the only fuel-injected engine offered in a production Corvette until the introduction of the C4 generation in 1984. Approximately 7,171 units were built with the L76 engine across both body styles.
Transmission Options: Three-speed manual (standard); Muncie M20 4-speed wide-ratio manual; Muncie M21 4-speed close-ratio manual; two-speed Powerglide automatic. Approximately 86 percent of all 1964 Corvettes were equipped with the four-speed manual. Of those, 10,538 wide-ratio units were paired with the 250 and 300 horsepower engines, while 8,496 close-ratio units were paired with the 365 and 375 horsepower engines.
Brakes & Chassis: Four-wheel drum brakes were standard — 1964 was the final model year before four-wheel disc brakes became a factory option, first offered in 1965. Positraction limited-slip rear axle was optional. Body-on-frame fiberglass construction. Wheelbase: 98 inches. The C2 introduced fully independent rear suspension to the Corvette in 1963, carried over for 1964, using half-shafts, U-joints, a frame-anchored differential, and a transverse leaf spring. Front suspension is independent with coil springs. Note: Side-exhaust pipes were not a factory option until 1965; all correctly configured 1964 Corvettes exit exhaust from the rear of the car only.
Factory Options of Note: Air conditioning was available but extremely rare — only 919 of the 22,229 total 1964 Corvettes were so equipped. While planned for 1964, optional cast aluminum knock-off wheels never made it to production until the 1965 model year. Power steering and power brakes were available. The extra-cost special paint option (non-standard color or primer delivery) was selected by only 24 customers.
