Guys With Rides is excited to offer Lot 25018, a 350-powered 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe, in a reserve price auction on behalf of the third owner.

Bidding opened Thursday, October 16, 2025 and will end at 3 PM Eastern Time on Thursday, October 30, 2025.  This rust-free 1868 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu for sale currently resides as a part of collection in Lumberton, New Jersey.

The 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe, a standout of the second-generation Chevelle lineup, epitomized American muscle with its sleek, semi-fastback design and robust performance options. Sporting a redesigned “coke-bottle” silhouette, it featured flowing fenders, a tapered front end, and a 112-inch wheelbase for two-door models, blending style with agility. The Malibu trim, the upscale non-performance variant, offered a refined interior with patterned cloth or vinyl upholstery, deep-twist carpeting, and optional Concours luxury packages, including woodgrain dash accents and deluxe steering wheels. Available in vibrant colors like Tuxedo Black or Grecian Green, it was a head-turner, with chrome trim and unique taillamps enhancing its aesthetic.
The rare Vigilite option (RPO U46), a distinctive feature, added a sophisticated touch. This fiber-optic monitoring system, mounted on the rear package tray, used a shroud, bezel, and lenses to display the status of tail lamps and headlamps via light signals, a cutting-edge feature for 1968 and one of the rarest options, making equipped models highly sought-after by collectors. The system required a separate fiber-optic harness, not included with the assembly, adding to its exclusivity.
Under the hood, the Malibu Sport Coupe offered a range of engines, from a 200-hp 307-cubic-inch V8 to potent 327-cubic-inch V8s delivering up to 325 hp, paired with a four-speed manual, Powerglide, or Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission. With a base price of around $2,560, the Malibu was a popular choice, with approximately 266,400 Units produced, although few featured the Vigilite option. Its blend of style, performance, and innovative technology, like the Vigilite system, cemented the 1968 Chevelle Malibu’s legacy as a quintessential muscle car, cherished for its rarity and charm.
The seller obtained this one-family-owned Chevelle approximately ten years ago as a payment in lieu of money owed him.  This Chevelle Malibu features all of its original sheet metal.  The second owner, the nephew of the original buyer, confirmed he repainted the exterior the original Carousel Red color, but left the door jambs in their original paint.  The color does match the trim tag, which is consistent with the restored black vinyl bench seat interior. The only exterior modifications are period-correct dual-sport mirrors.
Mechanically, the previous owner replaced the original and worn out 307 cubic inch small-block V8 and PowerGlide two-speed automatic transmission with a warmed-over four-bolt-main 350 cubic inch V8, mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 three-speed automatic transmission. Most recently, the mechanic of the private collection installed a brand new Holley carburetor and pulled the gas tank to replace the sending unit’s sock. Those two items resolved a hesitation problem and the car now runs very well.
This 1968 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe for sale features several factory options.  The original AM/FM radio remains in place.  While the car also features optional front disc brakes, they are not power-assisted. This Chevelle for sale does feature power steering.  The most interesting option is the fender-mounted U46 “Vigilite” fibre optic lamp monitoring system.

Specification Summary

Rudy's Take:

This 1968 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe is one of the cars I would have liked to own in high school. The car features a brand-new carburetor. All of the car's sheet metal is original, and as the undercarriage pictures highlight, this Chevelle is a very solid example. The tires are over ten years old, so the next caretaker should plan to replace the current set with fresh rubber.

This is the perfect Chevelle Malibu for someone to enjoy as is or buy it to use as the basis for a street machine or restomod build.
