The 1983 Ford F-150 Camper Special is a factory-optioned variant of Ford’s seventh-generation “Bullnose” F-Series, produced in the final model year before the F-100 was retired and the F-150 became Ford’s entry-level full-size truck. The 1983 model year marked the introduction of Ford’s Blue Oval emblem centered in the front grille, replacing the hood-mounted FORD lettering used on earlier trucks.
The Camper Special package returned for 1983 after being briefly folded into the Trailer Towing package for 1982. It bundled heavy-duty engine cooling (on 4.9L, 5.0L, and 5.8L engines), a high-output alternator, ammeter and oil pressure gauges, a heavy-duty turn signal flasher, bright low-mount swing-away mirrors, the Handling Package, an external automatic transmission oil cooler, and a factory trailer wiring harness.
Body Configurations: Regular Cab and SuperCab (37.4 cu. ft. of interior space, bench or jump seats). Bed options include Styleside in 6.75′ or 8′ lengths, or Flareside in 6.5′. Wheelbase is 116.8″ on short-bed models and 133.0″ on long-bed configurations. Two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions were available.
Engine Options: 3.8L V6 (base); 4.9L inline-six; 5.0L V8; 5.8L 351W V8 — the latter newly introduced to the F-Series lineup for 1983 as the first F-Series engine with Ford EEC-IV computerized engine controls. Transmission options include the C6 3-speed automatic and 4-speed manual.
Drivetrain: 2WD models use Ford’s Twin I-Beam independent front suspension. 4WD models use a Dana 44 TTB front axle. Rear axles vary by configuration between the Ford 9-inch and Dana 60.
Trim Levels: Standard, XL, XLT Lariat, and XLS (final year for the XLS). Chrome bumpers and accents are standard on most trims; the XLS used a full blackout exterior treatment including grille, bumpers, mirrors, and door handles.
The double-walled galvanized steel cargo bed carried Ford’s 36,000-mile anti-perforation warranty from the factory. Seventeen exterior colors were available, with optional two-tone schemes.
