The 1984 Pontiac Fiero SE Indy Pace Car Edition is one of 2,000 production replicas built to commemorate the Fiero’s role as the Official Pace Car of the 1984 Indianapolis 500 — the first mid-engine car to pace the race and the first four-cylinder car to do so since 1914. Three actual race-duty pace cars were separately prepared with a purpose-built 2.7L Super Duty four-cylinder producing 232 horsepower; all 2,000 public replicas were powered by the standard 2.5L OHV Iron Duke inline-four with throttle-body fuel injection rated at 92 horsepower. Approximately 250 of the 2,000 replicas were equipped with the four-speed manual transmission; the remainder left the factory with the three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic with torque converter lockup.

The Indy package was built exclusively on the SE trim and is distinguished by a full aero body treatment — front and rear fascias, gray lower body cladding, rocker extensions, and a decklid spoiler — that previewed the production 1985 Fiero GT. All replicas were finished in white with red and gray graphic accents; no other exterior color was available. Interior features light gray leather seating with red cloth inserts and Indianapolis 500 logo embroidery on the seatbacks.

The WS6 performance suspension package was standard, adding stiffer springs and damping rates and a front anti-roll bar. Braking is four-wheel disc. Steering is manual rack-and-pinion. The mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout uses a steel spaceframe chassis with non-load-bearing composite body panels.
