October 31, 2025 Update – the high bid did not meet the seller’s reserve price of $39,900, so after lowering their ask to $38,000 as a buy now, we decided to buy it! Stay tuned to our YouTube channel (@GuysWithRides1) when we fix the deferred maintenance items that likely scared some potential buyers away.

GuysWithRides’ is excited to offer Lot 25032, a 36k-mile 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo, in a reserve price auction on behalf of the second long-term owner.

Bidding opens Thursday, October 16, 2025 and will end at 4 PM Eastern Time on Thursday, October 30, 2025.  This well maintained, survivor-quality Porsche 944 Turbo currently resides with the second owner in Kansas City, Missouri.

If you’re not familiar, here is a brief history of why this 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo is so special compared to earlier 951 models:

The 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo represented the pinnacle of Porsche’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car evolution, combining forced induction with meticulous engineering to create one of the most sophisticated performance cars of its era.

At the heart of the 1989 944 Turbo sat a 2.5-liter inline-four engine featuring a KKK K26 turbocharger. This powerplant produced 247 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm in North American specification. The engine architecture derived from the naturally aspirated 944, but Porsche extensively modified it for forced induction duty. The cylinder head received improved porting and larger valves, while the compression ratio was lowered to 8.0:1 to accommodate boost pressure.

The turbocharging system utilized an air-to-air intercooler mounted in the front bumper, which reduced intake charge temperatures and allowed for more aggressive timing maps. Porsche’s engineers addressed the common turbo lag issue of the era through careful turbocharger sizing and engine management calibration, though some lag remained inherent to the technology of the time. The engine management system was a Bosch DME (Digital Motor Electronics) that controlled both fuel injection and ignition timing, representing advanced technology for 1989.

The 944 Turbo’s chassis featured significant enhancements over the base 944. Porsche fitted it with larger ventilated disc brakes—11.8 inches in front and 11.4 inches at the rear—with four-piston aluminum calipers providing exceptional stopping power. The suspension geometry utilized MacPherson struts in front and a semi-trailing arm design with Weissach axle at the rear, which provided passive rear-wheel steering effects that enhanced stability during cornering.

The transaxle configuration, with the transmission mounted at the rear axle, achieved nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution. This layout was crucial to the 944’s exceptional handling characteristics, as it minimized front-end weight bias typical of front-engine cars. The five-speed manual gearbox was specifically strengthened to handle the turbocharged engine’s increased torque output.

The 1989 model retained the 944 Turbo’s distinctive wider body, featuring flared wheel arches that accommodated 16-inch wheels—7 inches wide in front and 9 inches at the rear. The aerodynamic package included a rear spoiler that deployed at approximately 50 mph, reducing lift and improving high-speed stability. The coefficient of drag was approximately 0.33, impressive for a car with such aggressive styling.

The polyurethane front and rear bumpers integrated seamlessly with the body, while the pop-up headlights maintained the 944’s clean frontal profile when retracted. Porsche utilized aluminum for the hood and doors to reduce weight in the front of the vehicle, further optimizing weight distribution.

The 1989 944 Turbo achieved 0-60 mph in approximately 5.5 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 162 mph. This performance placed it firmly in exotic car territory while maintaining relative practicality and reliability. Fuel economy was modest at approximately 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, reflecting the performance-oriented nature of the turbocharged power plant.

The 1989 model year would be the final year for the 944 Turbo before Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo S and subsequently the 944 S2. The 944 Turbo established Porsche’s expertise in turbocharged four-cylinder engineering, lessons that would influence future models. Today, the 1989 944 Turbo is recognized as one of the most accomplished front-engine Porsches, offering genuine supercar performance with improved reliability over earlier turbocharged models and representing the maturation of Porsche’s transaxle sports car concept.

The seller of this 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo for sale is the second owner, having purchased the car as an off-lease in the early 1990s with only several thousand miles.  The seller proceeded to daily drive the car for several years across multiple moves to several different states, accumulating just over 35,000 miles when he titled the car in Kansas in 2008 as part of his last move.  in the seventeen years since, the seller added only one thousand miles during that time, but as the receipts illustrate, he has kept the car maintained and garaged under a high quality cover all that time.

This 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo for sale remains stock save for two items. First, the seller elected to have the wheels painted white approximately twenty years ago. Second, while the car features an aftermarket in dash CD player, the seller notes the original factory unit will be included as part of the sale.  During his ownership, the clutch has been replaced once and the timing belt has been replaced twice.

In preparation for the sale, the seller had the car professionally detailed.  The seller notes that beyond the worn shift knob, the only things needed attention are a loose driver’s side mirror lens and worn rear hatch struts.

The complimentary CarFax® confirms this 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo remains accident-free and documents the car has been driving sparingly over the past seventeen years.
