The 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is the second and final year of the revived Boss 302 nameplate, produced exclusively for the 2012 and 2013 model years before being discontinued. Approximately 3,553 standard Boss 302s were built for 2013, with an additional 747 Boss 302 Laguna Seca models produced that year. Each car carried an individually assigned sequence number. The Boss 302 was offered in two configurations: the standard Boss 302 and the track-focused Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Both are coupe-only, manual-transmission-only models.
2013-Specific Updates Over 2012: The 2013 model adopted new low-gloss black reflective hockey stick side graphics directly referencing the 1970 Boss 302 livery — the 2012 model used the “C” stripe referencing the 1969 original. Additional 2013-specific updates include a revised front grille treatment, LED daytime running lights, LED surround taillights, functional hood heat extractors, a tire mobility kit, TrackApps performance instrumentation, and the new School Bus Yellow exterior color option with Sterling Gray accent treatment. Mechanically, the 2013 is identical to the 2012.
Engine — “Roadrunner” 5.0L Ti-VCT V8: The Boss 302 engine is a naturally aspirated 302 cu. in. (4,951 cc) DOHC 32-valve V8 with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and sequential multi-port fuel injection, rated at 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque with a 7,500 rpm redline. Internal upgrades over the standard Mustang GT’s 5.0L include forged connecting rods, forged pistons, race main and rod bearings, larger sodium-filled exhaust valves, a high-lift camshaft, CNC-ported cylinder heads, a unique intake manifold, exhaust headers, a larger radiator, an oil cooler system, and a cold-air intake. An additional 32 horsepower over the Mustang GT was achieved through these modifications without forced induction.
TracKey: Every Boss 302 was supplied with two keys — a standard black key and an optional red TracKey. The TracKey communicates with a dual-path powertrain control module (PCM) to switch the car’s calibration to full track mode, altering more than 200 engine management parameters and enabling two-stage launch control. TracKey was an industry first at time of introduction. Buyers who did not initially purchase the TracKey could add it after purchase.
Transmission & Drivetrain: 6-speed manual transmission only — no automatic was available. Rear axle ratio: 3.73:1. Standard Boss 302: open differential standard, Torsen helical limited-slip differential optional (included with the Recaro seat package). Boss 302 Laguna Seca: Torsen limited-slip standard.
Suspension & Chassis: Compared to the Mustang GT, the Boss 302 rides on higher-rate front and rear coil springs, a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar, and stiffer bushings throughout. Ride height is lowered 11 mm at the front and 1 mm at the rear to replicate the raked stance of the original 1969–1970 cars. Dampers are 5-way manually adjustable at the shock tower. Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control carry a revised intermediate Sport mode calibration for track use.
Brakes: 14-inch vented Brembo front rotors. Functional front brake cooling ducts standard on the Laguna Seca; available on the standard Boss 302.
Exhaust: Quad outlet “surround sound” exhaust system — two conventional rear outlets plus dual side-exit ports behind each rocker panel.
Wheels: 19-inch Boss Black Gloss multi-spoke alloy wheels standard. Laguna Seca: 19 x 9-inch front and 19 x 10-inch rear Sterling Gray machined aluminum wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa R-compound tires.
Boss 302 Laguna Seca Package (Equipment Group 501A): Rear seat delete with chassis-stiffening X-brace, RECARO sport seats standard, Torsen helical limited-slip differential standard, stiffer rear spring rates, larger rear stabilizer bar, Laguna Seca-specific damper valving, functional front brake cooling ducts, transmission oil cooler, larger front splitter, larger rear spoiler, and Laguna Seca track outline badging. For 2013, accent colors on the Laguna Seca shifted from red (2012) to gray and white. Approximately 18 percent of total 2012–2013 Boss 302 production across both years was Laguna Seca-spec.
Interior: Standard cloth upholstery (not leather), 4.2-inch color LCD instrument cluster with MyColor illumination, TrackApps performance display (0–60, 0–100, quarter mile, lateral G-force), SYNC infotainment with Bluetooth connectivity, and steering wheel-mounted controls. Optional RECARO bucket seats available on standard Boss 302.
Factory Performance Figures: 0–60 mph under 5 seconds; quarter mile approximately 13 seconds. Laguna Seca skidpad: 0.96g.
